The list of all the local projects, businesses and innitiatives
which might be of interest for tourists visiting the St. Catherine area
is listed below, with all their contacts displayed. It is worth to check
them out to add value and fun to your holiday - you might even get an idea
for shopping or find a special, authentic present instead of the usual tourist
souvenirs others buy.

National Park's Visitor Center
Located at the turn-off point from the main road to the Monastery
(at the round-about), opposite the ancient cemetery and the
tomb of Sheikh Harun, the EU funded Visitor Center is open from 9 AM to noon, except on Fridays and Sundays.
If not open, you can ask across the road in the small settlement
for the caretaker, or at the National Park's Office
in the village (Shamiya). The exhibitions in the six buildings are excellent and it is
definitely worth a look. It has geological, geographical, natuiral
and cultural displays, short films and sound-shows carasteristic
of the area. |

Medicinal and Aromatic Plants

Rare medicinal plants unique to the region are cultivated in
greenhouses for preserving biodiversity, research and for sale.
There is a small shop right at the Monastery (among the other
shops selling souvenirs) and also one in the village next to
the greenhouses and the Fansina Women's Cooperative shop. You
can see and walk to the greenhouses from anywhere in the village,
or, if you have your own tranport, take the road toward Wadi
el Arbain from the main road opposite the Moonland Safari Hotel
and Camp. The project was set up with the help of UNDP and the
EU. |

• The
Medicinal Plants Conservation Project - There is a comprehensive
database aimed "to inform and educate protectorate managers,
policy makers, scientists as well as the general public about medicinal
plant species and their associated value". There are 481 different
species of medicinal plants, all found in South Sinai, listed in the
database. Unfortunatelly the common name of the plants is listed in
Arabic only.
"The St. Katherine's Herbarium is now complete with 353 herbarium
sheets housed at the St. Katherine's office" and you can search
and view many of these sheets online.
